History of the Firm

On July 1 1990, John David Edison incorporated JOHN DAVID EDISON INTERIOR DESIGN INC., a full service Interior Design firm located in Toronto with an associate office in Tokyo and Shanghai. Since the firm’s incorporation it has gained an International reputation specializing in Luxury Hotels, Luxury Residential, Condominiums, Golf Clubs. JDE has long associations working with architectural firms in Toronto, Hong Kong, Tokyo and most recently the Middle East. The firm is very familiar with the many and varied building practices located in these regions and designs accordingly for these conditions.

Prior to starting his own firm John David Edison was invited to join the Toronto firm of Rosalie Wise Design, at that time the Interior Design arm of Four Season’s Hotels & Resorts. From 1982-1990 he worked for RWD, becoming a Senior Designer in 1984.

Philosophy

If the heart of an INTERIOR lies in its structural presence its soul is less tangible. It grows from an understanding of ARCHITECTURE, is shaped by ingenuity and vision and coloured by personal dreams. It reaches beyond construction to the interplay of design and detail, of bold gestures, rich textures and fresh impressions. COLOUR is key, Unconstrained by convention it creates an architecture of its own. It defines one detail or invents whole new associations. Elements are layered against a backdrop of thoughtful harmonies and rich values all in the presence of furniture and objects that are inspired by a balance of classic authenticity and enduring grace.

The point: good design transcends the present while praising the timeless!

Process

JDE with many years of International experience, working on both large and small projects, has evolved a ‘unique’ approach that tries to balance the needs of the owner with the building’s function and the architect’s vision. At the same time the firm strives to be a quietly strong ‘team member’ in all phases of the design, design documentation, construction and the FF&E selection process.
